Likewise when putting in carpet don't buy the best carpet out there. Stay modest and select colors that are neutral and pleasing to most people. You can't recover the cost of expensive carpet when you sell the house. Don't bother putting in a lot of expensive draperies, either. You'll never recover the cost at the time of sale.

The rule of thumb is a simple one. Stay modest. Don't get the cheapest but don't feel you should get the most expensive either. You just can't recover the cost.
