You can't recover the cost of expensive carpet when you sell the house. Don't bother putting in a lot of expensive draperies, either. You'll never recover the cost at the time of sale.

The rule of thumb is a simple one. Stay modest. Don't get the cheapest but don't feel you should get the most expensive either. You just can't recover the cost.
